TEAM NEWS - ENGLAND

18:50: Right then, let’s take a closer look at this starting XI. Gareth Southgate is sticking to the plans that earned a semi-final place at the 2018 World Cup with five at the back.

Jordan Pickford retains his position between the sticks with the familiar sight of Kieran Trippier, John Stones and Harry Maguire ahead of him.

But there are new faces in the shape of Liverpool’s Joe Gomes and Luke Shaw, who is enjoying regular first-team football for Manchester United.

Jordan Henderson, Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard form the midfield three with Harry Kane partnered by Marcus Rashford in the absence of Raheem Sterling.

It’s a pretty fluid team selection. That’s what they say nowadays, right? Fluid…

ENGLAND vs SPAIN

18:45: And here comes the starting XI. A quick glance tells me that Gareth Southgate has brought Joe Gomez straight into the fold. He starts in a back three alongside Harry Maguire and John Stones. Manchester Unite duo Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford also start.

England XI: Pickford, Maguire, Stones, Gomez; Trippier, Henderson, Alli, Lingard, Shaw; Rashford, Kane.

Subs: Walker, Butland, Alexander-Arnold, Rose, Tarkowski, Dier, Loftus-Cheek, Delph, Welbeck, McCarthy, Bettinelli.

BIZARRE

18:40: I’m aware that this story has very little to do with tonight’s clash, but I have to mention it otherwise my head will explode.

John Terry is poised to move to Spartak Moscow on a one-year contract…

Terry, 37, has already undergone a medical and Spartak hinted at an imminent announcement on their Twitter account.

TEST…

18:35: So, after years of tournament failures and steadily dwindling expectations, England's surprise run to the World Cup semi-finals has given us optimism.

Not a familiar feeling for England supporters, granted, but tonight should provide an early test of the depth of the feelgood factor emanating from Gareth Southgate's young squad.

Is Southgate's quiet revolution in full swing, or have Spain recovered from their chaotic World Cup?

ENGLAND vs SPAIN

Gareth Southgate was quick to seize on the apparent disconnect between the Three Lions and the public at large when he arrived in the job.

That trouble manifested itself mainly obviously at the national stadium, where early qualifying games attracted indifferent crowds, occasional boos and an abundance of paper aero planes.

Events in Russia finished the job of reviving the relationship and Southgate's squad have earned a celebratory atmosphere on their return.
